New Zealand Tauhou - Wax Eye
The tauhou, or waxeye, carries a name that means “new arrival” — a small traveller that reached Aotearoa in the 1800s and has since become part of the fabric of our native landscape. Found from sea level to alpine heights, the tauhou symbolises renewal, adaptability, and quiet connection.
Although widespread, their wellbeing remains an important indicator of the health of our ecosystems. The Department of Conservation (DOC) monitors tauhou populations as part of its broader guardianship of te taiao — the natural world — ensuring balance between people and place.
In this painting, the artist captures the delicate poise of the tauhou — a whisper of life and light rendered in soft greens and silver tones. Each brushstroke honours the bird’s enduring spirit and the resilience of nature itself.
